Lisbon-based Turkish artist Sena Runa twists, folds, and arranges scrolls of colorful paper into intricate designs that push the boundaries of the everyday material. Inspired by the world around her, the talented artist can translate almost any object into her distinct artistic style. From paper insects to ornately patterned musical instruments, each carefully rendered composition not only showcases Runa’s talent, but a love for her craft.
Runa courageously left her corporate job in 2015, in pursuit of her artistic passion. Ever since then, she’s been creating her colorful paper quilled sculptures that put a contemporary twist on the age-old technique that dates back to the 15th century. “While I was searching the internet for inspiration to find the right hobby for me, I found a colorful picture that was made from paper using the quilling technique, but I had no idea what it was called,” she tells My Modern Met. “I tried to make it (I had colored papers from my earlier hobby: origami), but it turned out awful! After exploring many quilled creations online, I soon found my own style.”
Runa recently published her own book on the art of paper quilling, where she shares her techniques for creating her stunning designs. You can now buy the Quilling Art book on Amazon and purchase Runa’s quilled creations through her Etsy shop.
